San Diego Union Tribune - Michele Parente
Is there a harder working kitchen than Whisknladle’s?

Under the direction of chef Ryan Johnston, the Whisknladle team cures its own salumi meats, pickles vegetables, hand-cuts pasta, bakes bread, churns ice cream and even creates flavored tonics and purées for the “artisan” cocktails.
All that hard work is paying off. The quirkily named La Jolla gourmet bistro – formerly Fresh and Fresh(er) – made Condé Nast Traveler’s 2008 “Hot List.” But the real accolades are the oohs and ahhs uttered throughout the patio dining room. Those house-cured meats and accompaniments are stellar, as is the seared ahi in piquillo pepper sauce, juicy grilled leg of lamb and tagliatelle Bolognese (if a tad too al dente). The chocolate peanut butter vacherin is killer.

“We were happy with our dinner — and we’re all looking forward to coming back to watch this promising chef and his venturesome crew grow and bloom.”

“Absolutely in love with this place and dying to go back. Just opened up last week. Writing a Yelp review is regretful because I don’t want this place to get busy. But then again, sharing is caring.”

Riviera Magazine - Restaurant Review, July 2008 - Abe Opincar

“Whisknladle manages to be all things to all people. But folks who have a thoughtfull love of food and cooking will know that Whisknladle understands them best of all.”

“All I can say is what a gem! I would like to thank the people behind Whisknladle that have finally transformed dining in

San Diego, to something above the standard Californian overpriced restaurant.http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/27/335734/San-Diego/La-Jolla-restaurants/Whisknladle.html “Whisknladle is unlike every other SD restaurant. The restaurant makes EVERYTHING in house, sausage, pasta, butter, you name it. They put such care in everything they make and it shows, they use the freshest ingredients and organic produce to bring you a dining experience on par with

San Francisco dining.” http://www.foodbuzz.com/reviews/us/california/la_jolla/273931-a-foodie-destination-not-to-be-missed “I will tell you what…Whisknladle is EXACTLY what La Jolla needs. Actually it’s exactly what

San Diego needs.” http://www.sandiegorestaurants.com/users_comments.cfm/restaurant/1382/Whisknladle “With so many chic San Diego restaurants serving tiny portions of low fat entrees, it is a blessing to have something so wholesome, simple, and comforting enter the local dining scene, particularly in the fusion capital of San Diego - La Jolla .” http://blog.discoversd.com/san-diego-restaurant-blog/whisknladle-in-la-jolla.html

“The best meal I have ever had - A pictoral adventure” -Laurel

“The decor of the space was modern and minimalist, with tall ceilings, a smooth concrete bar and light bulbs that hung low, from the high ceilings. The atmosphere, was laid back, the crowd was upscale and ranged in ages from mid 20’s to mid 40’s that night.”

“How many times can a restaurant reinvent itself? In my opinion, as many times as it takes to get it right. With the opening of Whisknladle (formerly Fresh[er]) still conveniently located on Wall Sreet in La Jolla, owner Arturo Kassel has gotten it right – again! But, with this cozy, stylish neighborhood restaurant, partner Chef Ryan Johnston has brought to us his version of European home-style cooking that he says, “satisfies the belly and satiates the soul.” I couldn’t agree more.”
